The ‘I can’t’ cycle

That idea that just won’t go away – it’s not just any old idea is it? It’s one which lights you up every time you feel it calling you. And for those first few moments you feel the knowing, the certainty of it. Wouldn’t that be fantastic? Wow, you are in love with it!

But then you get to thinking about it and you begin to realise the enormity of it – I mean, how are you going to do that? Then it really hits you – you don’t know how and who and when, you don’t have the time, the money, the contacts – and what if it fails, what if you fail?

Suddenly this beautiful, brilliant idea which makes you come alive, which sends shivers of joy down your spine, seems impossible, crazy, just a pipe dream. You tell yourself – maybe later, I just need to fix this about myself first – I need to fix this lack in me and then I’ll be ready.

You listen to all the reasons popping into your mind about why you can’t and if you told them to your friends, chances are they would all agree with you because they seem so true.

And you push that amazing idea away, that idea which feels so exhilarating and you tell yourself it doesn’t matter, that everything is ok just as it is. But that’s not really how you feel, is it? That feeling of ‘I can’t’ is so painful, so painful because it is a denial of everything that you are.

And you know it, don’t you?
